MLB:
San Diego leads the bunch with a 19-16 record, 3 games above .500. Not bad, but that's the best California has to offer.
Oakland is next at .500 with a 17-17 record.
San Francisco and LA are tied with 17-18 records, 1 game below .500.
The Angels bring up the rear with 15-20.
Anyone going to bet that we'll see one of these teams playing in October? 4 teams in one state and not one a playoff contender.
NFL:
We got the 49ers, Raiders, and Chargers. Other than the Chargers playoff appearance in 2004, which they lost in the first round, when was the last playoff win for a California team? 3 seasons ago in 2002, when the Raiders beat the Titans in the Championship game 41-24. Of course they went on to get destroyed by the Bucs in the Super Bowl, becoming the only AFC team to lose a Super Bowl in the last 5 years.
Since 2003, the combined record of California teams is 51-93. If it wasn't for the Chargers, the two bay area teams have a 26-70 record since 2003. The most games a bay area team has won since 2003 has been 7 by the 49ers.
And the NFL wants to add teams to California?
NBA:
There's the Lakers, Clippers, Kings, and Warriors. Lakers made the playoffs this year, but are still in rebuilding mode since 2004. Kings have done pretty good till this year and now look to be headed downwards. The Warriors are entering their 10th year of futility, with no end in sight to move past the rebuilding stage. And finally the Clippers, who have been the doormat of LA since moving there. But ironically, they are the best California has to offer in the NBA. They finished ahead of the Lakers the last two years and are making a playoff run this year. That's how bad the California teams have become, the Clippers are #1 in California.
NHL:
While the Ducks, Kings, and Sharks have done well to make the playoffs throughout their existence. A Stanley Cup has not been raised in California, EVER, IN THE HISTORY OF THE NHL! Of course this could change this year, but I'm not holding my breath.
It's been awhile since California has celebrated a champion. Not a good time to be a fan of California teams.
